“Jumping Claims” was published in 2019 on Alienocene, a multimedia webzine of philosophy, art, and criticism organized by philosopher Fréderic Neyrat. The essay addresses the operation of claims and claiming with regard to identity group membership. The impetus for the text came from the experience of having been invited to contribute to four separate Asian American-themed shows and projects, with no overlapping involvements between them, in the space of eighteen months. This, after many years of invisibility in Asian American art and cultural scenes, and very little cultivation of such recognition on my part. It seemed like I was being claimed. By participating, I validated the claim–and reciprocated it. These reflections followed.
